Our Mission |

Probe International exposes the environmental, social, and economic effects of Canada's aid and trade abroad, revealing the devastating effects of our international projects. We monitor and expose the devastating effects of projects financed by Canadian tax dollars through international financial institutions like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank and through bilateral agencies like the Canadian International Development Agency and the Export Development Corporation. These national and international agencies have financed the world's worst environmental, social and economic disasters in the name of aid and trade.
Probe International fights for the rule of law and democratic processes as much as against ill-conceived development projects. We believe that the best way to protect the earth's environment is to ensure individual, corporate, and government accountability. We also believe that those affected by development projects should have the right to make the final decision whether projects that affect their environments and livelihoods should go ahead.
Probe International works closely with grassroots organizations from all over the world who are fighting to protect their environments and livelihoods. We strengthen their hand by publicizing their information worldwide, by joining with them to lobby against those financing the destruction, and by searching out and obtaining for them corporate and official documents that are being kept secret. Likewise, by providing detailed information about how our corporations and aid agencies inflict environmental ruin, Third World grassroots organizations help stop destructive projects, and help us make Canadian and international aid institutions accountable.
Because Probe International is not dependent on governments or industry for our funding, we are free to reveal exactly who is doing what, where, and when: we name names without fear or favour. Probe International is an independent environmental advocacy organization, accountable only to the public at large. The bulk of our funding comes in the form of small donations from the Canadian public. |
